The Setting:
It is the early 1920s, and you have arrived at the famous Maidstone Arms, a bed and breakfast inn. The inn is located in the up-and-coming East Hampton area on Long Island and the building dates back to the 1600s. The beautiful grounds include quaint cottages for the guests, a lovely manicured garden, a relaxing pond, and an ancient cemetery. Maidstone Arms was originally the home of the Osborne family and also used as a tannery for nearly a century. But after the mysterious disappearance of Donald Osborne a few months ago, the inn has fallen under new ownership and has fully become a bed and breakfast. Travellers from all over the state of New York and beyond frequent the inn to relax, honeymoon, and vacation. But all is not so tranquil at Maidstone Arms. Since the disappearance of the previous owner, Donald Osborne, staff and guests have reported ghostly sightings of the man appearing all over the grounds, and other strange happenings at the inn. The rumors of the spectre of Osborne have the guests terrified and the staff panicking. A medium was finally brought in to find the source of these supernatural occurrences and to find out how to put the spirit to rest. The staff and guests have gathered into the common room for a séance with the medium to learn the truth behind the ghost. Some of you are guests vacationing at the inn who have seen the ghost, some of you belong to the staff at Maidstone Arms – but some of you are hiding more sinister motives. Consider everyone a suspect and ask your questions thoroughly.
The Crime:
As the medium commenced the séance, the lights dimmed and only candlelight flickered in the shadows. All the participants joined hands as the medium tried to connect with the spirit of Donald Osborne. The medium called out to his spirit from the beyond and commanded it to come into the room. To the astonishment of all the participants, suddenly, the medium’s eyes rolled back as the spirit of Osborne overcame her. Her voice changed and Donald Osborne began speaking through her. He told everyone that his spirit could not rest because he had been murdered. Not only that, but the murderer is within this very room! But just as Osborne was about to point out his killer, a supernatural flame burst from the fireplace and the medium fell out of her chair. When she regained her senses, Osborne was gone and she had no recollection of the possession. Osborne said that the murderer is within the room – but who is it? One of you is the murderer who killed Donald Osborne, the rest of you need to find out who it was. You must first examine the clues left by the ghost of Osborne to determine where and how the murder took place. Then, when you have found someone with a motive to murder Donald Osborne, the weapon which killed him, and who was at the place where he was murdered, then you may have found the true murderer.
The Party:
This mystery can be
modified for teens, church groups, and team builders. It can accommodate 10
to 25 male and female roles.
