The Setting:   The Crime:
It is the Roaring Twenties; The Jazz Age. Flappers are flaunting their disdain for the notions of decent behavior by wearing makeup, drinking hard liquor, smoking tobacco, and participating in brash, risqué behavior. Prohibition laws have given rise to organized crime as well as back alley speakeasies which serve bootleg liquor to those who know where to look. Tonight it is a New Year's Eve party at Plunkett's; a legitimate restaurant by day; turned Speakeasy at night.   The clock just passed midnight & everyone was dancing the night away. The familiar rapid rattling of what sounded like a machine gun. Everyone scrambled into the back alley, assuming it was a police raid or a mafia massacre. When the commotion died down Doris Plunkett, the speakeasy owner, checked the wine cellar where the bootleg liquor was stored. What she found was a dead body riddled with bullets. The body was of big cheese, Ed Malone, Chicago's most ruthless gangster.
